Organization Description:
To assist Guatemala's poor in various ways: building fuel-efficient wood-burning stoves; building kitchens and homes; providing student financial aid; teaching math and English classes in schools; providing schools with books and students with school supplies; leading children/youth on field trips; delivering used shoes and boots from the U.S.; purchasing medicine, food, clothing, and blankets for families living in extreme poverty; helping communities recover following natural disasters, etc.
Example Project:
Built more than 300 fuel-efficient wood-burning stoves the past three years in Guatemala's highlands region. These stoves come equipped with a chimney, thereby directing smoke out of the formerly smoke-filled kitchens. The stoves also reduce firewood consumption by about 50% over the traditional campfire-style method of cooking, saving everyone's time in collecting firewood as well as Guatemala's forests. Each family pays about 50% of the stove's $90 cost and Embrace Guatemala pays the rest.
