Organization Description:
Cigarra works with under-privileged families in Bogota, Colombia. The majority of them have been displaced from war torn areas by armed groups, such as guerrillas, paramilitary and/or army. We work with a community of about 1000 people, some 300 families. We have a daycare center for 140 children ages 6 months to 5 years, and a before and after school program for children up to 12 years of age. We also provide social services to the community, as well as preventive and primary care, housing and community development in association with governmental and non governmental groups. We want to be a symbol of hope for a very disadvantaged group of citizens, therefor our name Cigarra is Spanish for Cicada, an insect that lives most of its life underground, but eventually emerges into the sunlight and completes its life cycle.
Example Project:
The area where we work had no running water, sewage and most of the housing was made out of scraps. We have now running water, no open sewage, and most of the housing is of sturdy construction on foundations.
